VF IMPACT - CHARITY REVISITED
Time & Location
About the Event
Our final session will focus on the future of Charity. The economical balances are changing – what does that mean for charity? What is our approach right now and what will the future look like? How do we support others without creating dependencies? These are the questions we will be tackling – with adaptability, human capital and sustainability in mind.
Guest speaker: Dr. Auma Obama, Founder, Sauti Kuu Foundation www.sautikuufoundation.org
Born and raised in Kenya, Dr Auma Obama studied in Germany, obtaining a Masters degree at the University of Heidelberg, completing her doctorate studies at the University of Bayreuth and also graduating from the Berlin Film and Television Academy. She lived and worked in Germany and the UK before moving back to Kenya to work for the humanitarian agency, CARE International. A key component of Dr Obama’s work at CARE was the creation and coordination of the "Sport for Social Change Network" initiative that brought together grassroots organisation from various countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Egypt, Bangladesh), working with children and youth, in particular girls, using sport as a tool for positive social behaviour change, to support each other through the exchange and sharing of expertise and best practices.
Dr Auma Obama then went on to found her own organisation, the Sauti Kuu Foundation, of which she is the Director. Sauti Kuu seeks to give a voice to financially and socially disadvantaged children and youth. Using a Self-Help Model of intervention, the Foundation works to unlock their potential and enable them and their families to improve their lives by using locally available resources.
