Report form our March Volunteering Trip

Just three days after our London event, the VF team landed in Kenya for a week of hands-on work and emotional moments. For some, it was their first time visiting; for others, it was a chance to see how much the project has grown. From the moment we walked through the school gate, we were met with huge smiles and hugs from the children. Even though many don't speak English yet, they held our hands and invited us to play, sing, and dance.

It was a busy week of class observation, teaching, art, sports and connection. Our team worked together with local staff to make sure the VF values are part of everything that happens at school.

We can definitely say that the most meaningful interactions with the children occurred during breaks and at the end of the day. These moments allowed our volunteers to connect with students through play, conversation and shared activities.

Seeing the Vision Come to Life

One of the best moments of the trip was a special breakfast for our former students. Seeing these young men and women who we met when they were just starting primary school, now working jobs or studying at university was so rewarding. They now have the tools and the grit to face life’s challenges. It was wonderful to see them connecting and giving each other advice without needing the volunteers to lead them. This is exactly what we dreamed of: a community that supports itself.

We finished the week with "Cultural Day," a spectacular celebration of Kenya’s rich heritage, brought to life through vibrant music, traditional costumes, and high-energy dance performances. Each class took to the stage to honour the diverse cultures and tribes of Kenya, showcasing beautiful costumes created by the parents. The school grounds were transformed into a sea of colour as students, staff and guests joined together to celebrate the traditions that make our community so unique.

The energy was amazing, with the rhythmic beat of the music inviting everyone to participate in the celebration. It was a powerful moment of unity, proving that recognizing and celebrating our different backgrounds is a vital part of the VF spirit. From the youngest learners proudly wearing their tribal colours to the older students leading spirited group dances, the day was a joyful reminder of the pride and talent within our school. You can see the joy for yourself in our photos!
